Do you enjoy both puzzles and poetry? Find a poem hiding within a page of non-poetry text. It could be your favorite writer, or a thriller you thrift, or a newspaper, or anything in between - just not already poetry. It's a puzzle to find words and phrases that speak to you and then edit them down into a poetic surprise by removing everything else in between. Then we'll explore various ways to turn the poem into visual art.

You will find and create "black-out" and/or "cut-up text" poetry (or some combination).

     - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Found_poetry

     - internet / pinterest search "found poetry" for inspiration about what format/supplies speak to you

If you like to sketch out/plan ahead, bring 1-2 copies of your book pages. Bring the actual book (or book pages) if you plan to create directly onto original book pages. Newspapers are also great for cutting out lines to paste/collage into a poem (more like a cento poem).

    This class has been cancelled.

Maximum of 6 students. One 3-hour session.

*To reserve your place in any class, payment must be received at the time of registration.

*For a refund on any of our classes, we will need to be notified at least 48 hours in advance of the first class.

    PLEASE HAVE

REQUIRED MATERIALS TO BRING: (PLEASE READ CAREFULLY AS SUPPLIES ARE _NOT_ AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE AT STUDIO NORTH!)

    • word source: a used book you don't mind turning into an art project, or 3-4 book pages, perhaps by different authors. Preferably non-poetry, but anything, really. Thrillers have an abundance of action/emotion words per page which are great fodder for finding poetry. Newspapers feel less precious and can be cut into words and lines of your poem(s). Or some combination.
    • if you don't want to "deface" your favorite book or you just want to work out your poem and design first you should bring 1-3 good quality copies of 3-4 selected book pages.
    • scissors (and any substrate of your choice to glue found lines/words on, ie a sketchbook or other paper or board)
    • soft sharp pencil with eraser
    • waterproof ink pen
    • selection of your favorite art supplies      (

collage) scissors, glue stick, various papers, ephemera, stamps/ink

(drawing) colored ink pens, colored pencils, Neocolor crayons, acrylic paint markers/pens

(painting) *4 Flat* or similar favorite paintbrush(es), a few acrylic colors, palette paper
