    Have you ever wanted to paint birds in watercolor but found all those feathers, shapes, and details a little intimidating—or just weren’t sure where to begin? In this three-class watercolor series, we’ll work from bird references as we explore how to create loose, expressive birds in watercolor. Through demonstrations, guided painting, studies, and fun creative exercises, I’ll share the skills and process I use while encouraging you to loosen up and embrace the magic of expressive imperfection. From soft and subtle to colorful, bold, and full of movement, we’ll explore different ways to interpret birds without painting every feather. This class isn’t about painting the same bird as me. It’s about experimenting, making your own artistic choices, and creating your own interpretation of the bird. Come ready to make a few beautiful messes and let’s see where watercolor takes us. A little watercolor experience is recommended, as we’ll be building on basic techniques rather than starting from the very beginning.

    REQUIRED MATERIALS LIST

    WATERCOLOR PAPER

    PRACTICE PAPER

    Leanna uses 18" × 24" or 12" × 18" Strathmore 400 Series wire-bound watercolor paper for practice. We’ll be doing a lot of studies, and the larger sizes give you more room to work freely, so these are the recommended practice papers.

    FINAL PAINTING PAPER

    Arches, Fabriano Artistico, or similar 100% cotton watercolor paper.

    Minimum size: 8" × 10"; 9" × 12" or 11" × 14" are recommended. Give yourself plenty of room to stay loose.

    Cold press, hot press, or rough watercolor paper are all welcome.

    Each surface has its own unique characteristics and can produce beautiful results.

    PAINTS

    Bring at least:

    One yellow

    One red

    One blue

    One favorite dark

    This is a great class to bring along any granulating or specialty paints you may already have.

    SUGGESTED DARKS

    Payne's Gray

    Neutral Tint

    Indigo

    Jane's Gray

    Your own favorite dark mix

    If you already have watercolor paints, feel free to bring your favorite colors.

    OPTIONAL ADDITIONS

    Warm and cool versions of the primary colors

    A favorite green

    A favorite earth tone

    Additional favorite colors

    BRUSHES

    Bring a variety of watercolor brushes, including:

    Soft flat or Hake brush, approximately ¾"–1" wide (or similar)

    Large round brush (#10–14 recommended)

    Medium round brush (#6–8 recommended)

    Small round brush (#2–4 recommended)

    Large mop brush (optional)

    Medium mop brush (optional)

    Rigger (optional)

    Students are encouraged to bring at least one larger brush than they normally use.

    DRAWING SUPPLIES

    Pencil

    Kneaded eraser (or your favorite eraser)

    OTHER SUPPLIES

    Paper towels or absorbent cloth (Leanna personally loves blue paper shop towels because they are

    very absorbent and don't leave a texture.)

    Spray bottle (optional)

    Masking fluid (optional)

    Salt for texture effects (optional)

    Dr. Ph. Martin's Bleed Proof White or white gouache (optional)

    Painter’s tape (required unless using a watercolor block for final painting)

    Board for taping your watercolor paper if using loose watercolor paper

    If you already have watercolor supplies, please bring what you have.
