MATERIAL LIST
*I’ve listed my recommendations here but I am very flexible in terms of what “type” of each material you get. The item in bold is the necessity and if you have something in that category, bring it along! You can always get something else with your 20% discount at the store if your item doesn’t work.
· 9x12 watercolor paper pad – or a sketchbook with watercolor paper
· Watercolor paint – there’s many options that will work for this. If in doubt, bring what you have! Below I’ve listed my favorite “professional grade” option as well as the “budget version”
o BUDGET: Sakura Koi Watercolor Set. These come in various sizes, with as few as 12 colors all the way up to 36. Water brush and mixing tray are included. Great for portability, and for starting out
o PRO: Individual tubes. You’ll have to create your own palette with this approach, but the paint quality is quite different. I recommend purchasing “split primaries” + pink. You won’t need white. Daniel Smith and Qor are both excellent, and M. Graham is great as well. I use all 3. You’ll also need a palette to leave the paints in- I like my Mijello air tight 18 well.
· At least 3 brushes, one round, 2 other shapes you like – Mixed media brushes work well, designated watercolor brushes are even better. I recommend short handles over long. Bristle brushes will not work for watercolor.
· Water cup – recycled jars or plastic yogurt containers work great for this
· Rag – for drying your brush between colors
· Beige colored pencil for sketching
· Graphite pencil and eraser if you like, for sketching
