PAINTING THE DYNAMIC STILL LIFE
SATURDAY 11/18 & SUNDAY 11/19 9:30a.m. - 4:30p.m.
Join Eugene based artist Sarah Sedwick for this two-day workshop, and discover how much fun still life painting can be! Simple, colorful arrangements are a great way to hone your artistic vision, delve into color, composition, and brushwork, and make painting enjoyable and accessible - both in class and in your home studio.

We will focus on the essentials of realistic painting from life, while keeping our brushwork loose and painterly. We’ll explore fundamentals of color mixing using Sarah’s simple palette of six colors, and address composition and still life setup, learning to look at traditional subjects in a new way through a combination of demonstrations, short exercises, and longer-duration paintings. Instruction will be in oils, and students are encouraged to use them in class, but acrylics are also welcome. Water-soluble oils are not recommended. Beginning to advanced artists welcome.

Two day workshop, 7 hours each day. Maximum of 6 students.

PLEASE BRING:
Oregon Art Supply is generously offering a 20% discount on all materials for this class! If you aren’t sure what to get, you can purchase what you need during the workshop. I will be happy to help and show you what I use!

Palette - a 12x16 (or larger) disposable paper palette pad. Get white, not gray. Palette knife – not a teeny one. You want to be able to scoop up a pile of paint

Rags or paper towels (I like disposable blue shop towels, available at hardware

Solvent: Gamsol or Turpenoid
2 glass jars with tight-fitting lids
Paint - I use M. Graham brand. Please include the following colors:

Titanium white

Cadmium Red

Alizarin Crimson

Cadmium Yellow

Hansa Yellow

Ultramarine Blue

Cerulean Blue

Dioxazine Purple*

Yellow Ocher*

Ivory Black*

Burnt Siena*

* Starred colors are optional!*

Brushes - I use Connoisseur Taklon (synthetic, white bristles, red handles), but

it's up to your preference. I recommend a range of sizes from #2 to #6. A good starter kit is a #2 round, a #4 flat or filbert, and a #6 flat.

Canvases or other painting surfaces:

canvas panels,a pad of canvas paper,or any inexpensive painting surface for exercises

One or two canvases 8x8, 8x10 ,10x10 or similar size/shape for longer duration paintings. (you can purchase these during the workshop)

Easel and side table

A standing (not table-top) travel easel.Sometimes called a french easel. I use a half-box french easel by Mabef, called the “backpacker”

ATV table or side table for your palette (optional! the smaller the better)
Please plan on standing up to paint during this workshop-we will not have space for table-top easels, and standing will give you the ideal perspective on the still life. If you must sit, please bring a tall stool. Thanks!
